Beyond Linguistic Skill: The Art of a Sustainable Interpreting Career

Previously titled Interpreter and Artist: A Blending and a Balance. We changed the name after realising that some people assumed the session was only for interpreters who are artists or already interested in art. It’s not! You don’t need to consider yourself creative or be “good” at art to benefit from it.

This energising two-hour recorded workshop and panel discussion features artist and ASL interpreter Amy Rubinger, exploring the real pressures of interpreting and why finding something creative outside of interpreting can be so valuable for long-term sustainability in the profession.

Interpreting is often described as a “high-demand, low-control” profession. We take on the language, tone and emotions of multiple people every day, constantly adapting to different people, settings and expectations. That mental and emotional load builds up.

Having a creative outlet can help bring you back to yourself, reconnecting with your own identity, processing difficult jobs, reducing stress and regaining a sense of freedom and control after spending so much time holding space for others.

Amy shares how creativity can create space to breathe, process and reset. And it doesn’t have to mean being an artist. The focus is on discovering something outside interpreting that allows you to create, play, switch off and reconnect with yourself.

The session also includes a Q&A with Amy; Auslan interpreter, potter and PUD Ceramics Studio owner Paula Bun; and Auslan interpreter and Paint & Sip facilitator Brittany Manifis. Together, they share practical ideas and honest insights about building greater balance and longevity into an interpreting career.
